Course Descriptions

Course Numbers

Laredo College courses are numbered according to the format of the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS) for academic courses and the Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM) for workforce education courses.

As specified in the guidelines of the TCCNS and WECM, a four-letter prefix is used to identify the subject area. (Example: ENGL is English.)

A four-digit number follows the prefix (Example: ENGL 1301 Composition I ).

The first digit specifies the level of the course: 0 is developmental, 1 is freshman, 2 is sophomore, 3 is junior and 4 is senior.

The second digit identifies the credit-hour value of the course. (Example: ENGL 1301 Composition I is three hours.)

The third and fourth digits establish the course sequence. (Example: ENGL 1301 Composition I , ENGL 1302 Composition II .)

All course descriptions (academic and technical) include a three-digit code in parentheses following the number and title. The first digit designates the semester hour value of the course; the second digit specifies the number of lecture hours per week; and the last digit indicates the number of laboratory hours per week.

Modes of Instruction

Laredo College offers courses in several modes of delivery to provide students with flexible learning options. Each mode is defined by the proportion of instruction delivered online versus in-person and is identified by a section designation in the course schedule. These designations help students understand how and where they will engage with course content, classmates, and instructors.

Face-to-Face Courses

All instruction is delivered in a traditional classroom setting on campus. Students are expected to attend scheduled in-person sessions. To register for a face-to-face course, select a section that begins with “M” (Ft. McIntosh Course), “MP” (Ft. McIntosh Paired Course), “S” (South Campus Course), or “SP” (South Campus Paired Course).

Online Courses

All course activity is completed online; there are no required face-to-face sessions, though minimal on-campus activity may be required. To register for an online course, select a section that begins with “E” (Online Course) or “EP” (Online Paired Course).

Hybrid Courses

Most course activity is completed online, but there are some required face-to-face instructional activities such as lectures, discussions, labs, or other in-person learning activities. To register for a hybrid course, select a section that begins with “MY” (Ft. McIntosh Course) or “SY” (South Campus Course).

Videoconference Courses

Technologies are used to extend classroom lectures and other activities to students at remote sites in real time. Students attend scheduled lectures at a designated videoconferencing room that originates at an LC campus, local high school, or other location. To register for a videoconference course, select a section that begins with “MV” (Ft. McIntosh Course) or “SV” (South Campus Course).
