Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 safeguards the privacy of student educational records, grants students the right to inspect and review their records, and provides a process for correcting inaccuracies or misleading information. Laredo College adheres to FERPA regulations and informs students of their rights through general policy statements in the college catalog and detailed policy and procedure information in the Student Handbook. Copies are available from the Office of the Registrar.

Students may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if they believe the College has not complied with FERPA.

Under certain conditions, such as when a student is claimed as a financial dependent according to Section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code, the College may disclose student information to parents or legal guardians without the student’s written consent.

The Office of the Registrar maintains a Directory of Records, documenting all student educational records held by the College. All rights and protections under FERPA are reserved exclusively for the student.
