PLAB - Phlebotomy

PLAB 1223  Phlebotomy  2 Credit Hours  (1 Lec, 4 Lab)  
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. End-of-Course Outcomes: The student will demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety; demonstrate understanding of quality assurance and the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care system; and demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment, various type of additives used, special precautions necessary, and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents. The student will demonstrate proper techniques to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; and demonstrate the knowledge of requisitioning, specimen transport, and specimen processing. Co-requisite: MLAB 1201.

PLAB 1260  Clinical Phlebotomy Phlebotomist  2 Credit Hours  (6 Lab)  
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. End-of-Course Outcomes: As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry. Co-requisite: PLAB 1223.
